What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-like cap that is placed over the part of your tooth that is visible above your gums. It is typically prescribed as a restorative treatment to correct a tooth’s shape, size, and contour.
Dental crowns made from tooth-coloured ceramic or porcelain material offer highly aesthetic restorations that blend seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth. Porcelain crowns, in particular, are recommended for their natural aesthetics, along with other attributes of strength and durability.
Dental crowns are commonly used in cases where a tooth has a deep cavity that cannot be repaired with a regular filling. It may also be recommended following a root canal or placement of a large dental filling for protective as well as cosmetic reasons.
What to expect for treatment
A dental crown treatment typically requires two visits to the dentist. The first visit involves inspecting the tooth that needs crowning, shaping the tooth so that it can adequately accommodate the crown, taking impressions and fitting a temporary crown. Precise measurements of the prepared tooth, as derived from the impression, will be used to fabricate the permanent crown at a dental lab. A local anaesthetic will be applied to optimise patient comfort.
The second visit involves checking the site, removing the temporary crown and placing the permanent the crowns so that it fits snugly into the prepared site and blends in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
Restore the size, shape, and colour of your tooth with a robust and natural-looking dental crown.
