Sports Mouthguards
Did you know that approximately 25-50% of all sporting injuries are dental injuries?
Wearing a custom-made sports mouthguard is your best protection against sports-related traumatic injuries. For more information on our range of Sports Mouthguards, contact Molonglo Dental Surgery at 02 6287 1222.
At Molonglo Dental Surgery, we are committed to offering high quality, custom-made mouthguards that can significantly minimize trauma to teeth, surrounding tissues and jaws caused by sporting collisions.
Made from robust materials and precise measurements that conform to your individual measurements, our dental appliances are designed specifically to prevent dental injuries from collisions ranging from concussion of teeth, subluxation, chipped or broken teeth, and avulsion. Professionally fitted by your dentist, the close fit of the mouthguard offers maximum protection and comfort without restricting your ability to speak or breathe during sport.
Besides averting potential pain and trauma to your teeth, mouth and jaws, wearing a custom-made mouthguard is your best bet to save on an emergency trip to the dentist, possible surgery or costly restorative work involving a dental crown or dental implant.
If you are already using a custom-made dental mouthguard, don’t forget to get it checked every 12 months by a dentist to make sure that it still fits correctly and hasn’t been damaged. This is especially true for children who have new adult teeth emerging that will necessitate changing the mouthguard. You may simply bring the dental appliance along on their next dental check-up session.

What type of sports requires wearing a mouthguard to play?
While it should be noted that NOT only those who play sports may need to wear a protective dental mouthguard, it is however an essential appliance to wear for most contact sports, including the following:
Collision/ Contact Sports: Football, Footy, Basketball, Hockey, Water polo, Lacrosse, Netball, Baseball, Softball, Squash, Cricket, Boxing, Rugby, Martial Arts.
General/ Adrenaline Sports: Bike Riding, Horseback Riding, Skateboarding, In-line skating, Trampolining, Water-skiing, Snow ski racing.
Why should I wear a custom-fitted mouthguard?
The Sports Medicine Association estimates that 50% of children experience some form of dental injury. The Australian Dental Association recommends that a person participating in any sport that carries a risk of impact to the face should wear a custom-fitted sports mouthguard.
The two types of mouthguards are: Professional Custom-fit Mouthguards – as provided by the Dentist; and Over-the-counter (OTC) – available from chemists and sports shops.
The basic rule of thumb to achieve maximum protection from a mouthguard is: The closer the fit, the better the protection. That is precisely why the Australian Dental Association recommends a custom-fitted mouthguard from your dentist.
Over-the-counter (“boil and bite”) mouthguards tend to be significantly less effective in protecting you against serious mouth injury simply because they are less fitting as compared to a custom-made design. In fact, some studies indicate that as far as offering protection against injuries, many OTC mouthguards perform only marginally better than not wearing one at all. An ill-fitting mouthguard is also a lot less comfortable to wear. In the absence of a professionally fitted mouthguard, however, OTC mouthguards do provide a short-term solution.
Custom-fitted mouthguards
To fabricate a custom-fitted mouthguard based on your precise teeth and mouth dimensions, the dentist would first have to take an impression of your teeth and then create a plaster mould. Only then can the clinician, working alongside a trusted dental technician, construct the precise fitting type of mouthguard for your sport that has the optimum thickness, coverage and dimensions.
At Molonglo Dental Surgery, we ensure that the custom-made mouthguard is:
Robust and Long lasting: Made from high quality materials to Australia’s high safety and hygiene standards.
Tight-fitting: Professionally fitted to provide maximum protection for teeth and gums
Comfortable: Easy to wear; perfectly conforming to your teeth without restricting breathing and talking during sport.
